Day #9: The 3 Parts of Racing

“I tell our runners to divide the race into thirds. Run the first part with your head, the middle part with your personality, and the last part with your heart.” – Mike Fanelli

This quote is perfect for this stage in your running streak. You and I have just begun a long race. The race is to complete a lengthy goal, to run every day left in this year. Imagine this race in the context of the quote above: let’s run smart in these early days, these early months. Let’s run the first third with our heads. Let’s think the regimen out carefully and be sure to discipline ourselves to run under control – within ourselves – so that we are able to lace up the shoes again tomorrow. Then, when the going gets tough in the late spring and you are no longer so sure of this goal, you can muster up the grit of your personality and run through the difficulties with it. Finally, in the last third of this commitment, run with your heart. Finish strong because you want and need to complete this goal.

Run strong!
