Day #29: Any races in your future?

“The difference between a jogger and a runner is an entry blank.”                  ~Dr. George Sheehan

Have you signed up for a race lately? Ever? I am due – and I have several ideas in mind. One is our local marathon here in San Luis Obispo, and another is a more drawn-out project. The latter will require diplomacy with my family (aka my wife:), several years of training and a good dose of luck. My ultimate racing goal would be considered “other” in the poll above and it starts in Death Valley. Got any ideas of which Grandaddy of all races is my great aspiration?

And how about you? When will you put a downpayment on your dreams? What will it take to write that check that gives you a shot at being everything you are capable of being? It may be finally committing to your first 5k or to that marathon goal you have been putting off and putting off…

I remember a couple of years ago making a 200 Euro non-refundable payment the night before the Swiss Alpine Ultra Marathon. My wife was astonished at my hubris in even thinking about signing up. But I had done my training homework – and the race paid out huge dividends. After all, you can’t put a price on bliss!

Take a moment to reflect on your racing goals for the next 2 seasons, and please share your conclusions with the Run5kaday community in the poll above. Thanks!

“When you put yourself on the line in a race and expose yourself to the unknown, you learn things about yourself that are very exciting.”

“Why race? The need to be tested, perhaps; the need to take risks; and the chance to be number one.”
~Dr. George Sheehan

“Everyone in life is looking for a certain rush. Racing is where I get mine.”
